The Regional Economic Strategy Action Plan highlighted that the overall progress of each of the Three Pillars including Energy will be guided by dedicated Leadership Councils. The Science and Industry Council will take on a wider strategic role. The overall purpose of the Energy Leadership Council is to provide strategic guidance and advice to facilitate the development of the Energy Industries in North East England. The Regional Economic Strategy has identified the Energy Industries as a major source of economic growth for North East England. Energy Industries are defined as energy generation, distribution and management, and the provision of technology, equipment and services for these purposes.
The region is seeking to secure the growth of existing strengths, including offshore oil and gas equipment and services, and newly emerging strengths, including PV technology and bio-energy. It includes research, design and technology development.
The region is seeking to develop world leading strengths in these areas, enabling major export growth.
The region is also seeking to utilise new technologies and new approaches to energy management and use to enable the improved productivity of other businesses and sustainable development.
The Council will pursue three inter-related objectives:
• Provision of strategic advice and guidance to enable the achievement of these regional ambitions;
• High level coordination to various relevant organisations and activities;
• Championing major projects and investment.
To achieve the region’s objectives, integrated and informed working is required from business, education and research providers, and government in its various forms. The Leadership Council will provide a unique focus for this integration.
