The DTI's Energy White paper, entitled "Our energy future - creating a low carbon economy" defines a long-term strategic vision for energy policy combining UK Government environmental, security of supply, competitiveness and social goals.

In 1999 the North East published the first regional energy strategy in the UK. Written by The Northern Energy Initiative and funded partly through the European Regional Development Fund the document provided the region with clear and achievable goals in relation to energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy use.

The remit of the Review was to examine the UK's progress against the medium and long-term 2003 Energy White Paper goals and consider options for further steps to achieve them.

The bill which will implement the legislative aspects of the 2007 Energy White Paper, was introduced in the House of Commons on 10 January 2008.
